Secret               police,               library               record               surveillance,               wiretapping               and               forced               detention,               all               done               in               secrecy,               seems               like               a               horror               reserved               for               other               countries,               like               Hitler¹s               Germany,               rather               than               something               that               is               practiced               in               the               "land               of               the               free"               USA.

Perhaps               it               is               the               tendency               that               we               have               of               being               blind               to               what               is               directly               in               front               of               us,               or               maybe               it               is               because               we,               as               a               people,               are               kept               preoccupied               and               busy               that               many               of               us               do               not               realize               that               with               the               passing               of               the               Patriot               Act               on               October               26,               2001,               our               government               is               doing               just               that.

Now,               with               a               bill               dubbed               the               Patriot               Act               II,               more               Big               Brother               monitoring               and               control               may               be               on               its               way.

The               Patriot               Act               was               hurriedly               passed               in               the               aftermath               of               9-11.

The               word               "patriot"               in               the               Patriot               Act               is               an               acronym               that               spells               out               "Providing               Appropriate               Tools               Required               to               Intercept               and               Obstruct               Terrorism".

While               the               premise               of               this               act               may               seem               justifiable,               especially               immediately               after               a               tragedy               that               was               categorized               as               an               act               of               terrorism,               this               legislation               slowly               consumes               many               civil               liberties               that               this               country               has               prided               itself               on               since               its               conception.

This               act               gives               law               enforcement               officials               broader               authority               to               conduct               electronic               surveillance               and               wiretaps.

It               also               gives               the               president               the               authority               to               confiscate               any               and               all               property               within               US               jurisdiction               of               anyone               who               is               believed               to               be               engaging               in               terrorism               when               the               country               is               "under               attack".

The               Act               also               affects               financial               activities               and               Immigration.

The               bill               was               passed               by               a               vote               of               357-66               by               the               House               of               Representatives               and               98-1               by               the               Senate.

"Today,               we               take               an               essential               step               in               defeating               terrorism               while               protecting               the               constitutional               rights               of               all               Americans,"               George               W.

Bush               said               during               the               signing               ceremony.

While               Bush¹s               rhetoric               may               have               been               convincing               to               the               general               public,               the               Act,               in               reality,               infringes               on               our               Constitutional               Rights.
               Patriot               Act               I
               "These               new               and               unchecked               powers               could               be               used               against               American               citizens               who               are               not               under               criminal               investigation,               immigrants               who               are               here               within               our               borders               legally               and               also               against               those               whose               First               Amendment               activities               are               deemed               to               be               threats               to               national               security               by               the               Attorney               General,"               Gregory               T.

Nojeim,               Associate               Director               of               the               American               Civil               Liberties               Union's               Washington               Office               stated.

Critics               of               the               Patriot               Act               complain               that               it               funnels               excessive               power               to               the               Executive               branch               of               the               government               while               limiting               the               Congress               and               Judicial               branch,               thus               eliminating               some               of               the               "checks               and               balances"               that               were               designed               to               keep               our               government               accountable.
               Surveillance
               The               Patriot               Act               provides               federal               agencies               with               more               surveillance               options               and               less               judicial               supervision.

"Roving               wiretaps"               are               one               example               of               the               new               legalized               powers               of               the               government               with               the               passing               of               the               Patriot               Act.

It               allows               a               roving               wiretap               that               allows               a               person's               conversations               to               be               intercepted               on               multiple               phones,               including               cell               phones               and               other               phones               a               target               uses               (possibly               in               someone               else's               home).

This               can               now               be               done               without               probable               cause.

These               roving               wiretaps               are,               of               course,               authorized               secretly.
               Before               the               Act,               the               government               could               order               a               telephone               company               to               turn               over               a               list               of               the               numbers               being               dialed               to               and               from               a               particular               telephone               on               an               order               from               a               judge.

The               Patriot               Act               forces               a               judge               to               grant               the               order               if               the               government               certifies               that               the               information               sought               is               "relevant               to               ongoing               criminal               investigation",               regardless               of               whether               or               not               the               judge               agrees.
               It               also               allows               the               government               access               to               dialing,               routing               and               signaling               information               in               connection               with               computers.

This               means               that               the               government               lawfully               has               access               to               emails               sent               and               received               and               a               list               of               websites               visited               on               a               computer.

After               obtaining               a               warrant,               feds               will               be               able               to               track               all               websites               people               visit               from               a               public               library               and               obtain               all               the               email               addresses               involved               in               any               correspondence,               without               the               library               being               able               to               tell               its               patrons               that               surveillance               is               taking               place.
               Feds               will               also               be               monitoring               library               use,               and               instead               of               being               required               to               show               probable               cause               to               get               a               search               warrant               for               library               records,               patron               registration               information               and               internet               use               records,               now               an               agent               must               only               explain               why               he/she               thinks               that               records               may               be               related               to               terrorism               or               intelligence               investigations.

Under               the               Act,               librarians               will               be               under               a               gag               order               preventing               them               from               telling               library               users               that               their               records               were               turned               over               to               the               feds               for               ongoing               monitoring.
               It¹s               not               only               libraries               that               are               affected               -               bookstores               are               under               the               same               microscope.

Warrants               can               be               obtained               quite               easily               that               allow               agents               to               collect               "any               tangible               things"               in               a               bookstore               (or               library).

This               would               include               customer               records               and               personal               information,               book               circulation               records,               disks               and               computers.

"We               now               know               that               bookstores               and               libraries               have               received               such               subpoenas               asking               for               the               purchase               or               lending               records               of               their               patrons.

It               is               a               truly               frightening               day               in               America               when               bookstores               are               considering               destroying               their               records               so               when               the               government               comes               knocking               at               the               door               to               find               out               what               their               customers               have               been               reading               they               will               have               nothing               to               turn               over,"               Senator               Russ               Feingold               (Democrat,               Wisconsin)               said.
               Immigration
               The               Patriot               Act               enables               the               Attorney               General               to               certify               that               he               has               "reasonable               grounds               to               believe"               that               a               non-citizen               endangers               national               security.

He               can               detain               and               deport               non-citizens               with               little               or               no               judicial               review.

The               Attorney               General               and               the               Secretary               of               State               now               have               the               authority               to               designate               domestic               groups               as               terrorist               organizations,               and               can               deport               any               non-citizen               who               is               a               part               of               them.

"If               you               overstay               your               visas               even               by               one               day,               we               will               arrest               you.

If               you               violate               a               local               law               -               we               will               hope               that               you               will,               and               work               to               make               sure               that               you               are               put               in               jail               and               be               kept               in               custody               as               long               as               possible,"               John               Ashcroft               vowed               to               "suspected               terrorists".
               Other               Powers
               The               Attorney               General               announced               that               he               intends               to               eavesdrop               on               inmates¹               attorney-client               conversations.

"I¹ve               heard               discussion               of               it               on               some               of               the               talk               shows               in               our               state..."               Maria               Canwell               (Washington               Senator)               said.

"Attorneys               [were]               calling               in               and               saying               that               information,               their               private               conversations               between               them               and               their               client,               were               being               gathered."
               The               Attorney               General               has               said               that               he               intends               to               have               state               and               local               law               enforcement               help               question               5000               people               who               appear               to               have               been               selected               based               on               ethnicity               or               religion.
               The               President               issued               an               Executive               order               declaring               that               he               will               decide               when               trials               will               take               place               before               military               commissions               rather               than               in               normal               courts.
               Freedom               of               the               press               means               very               little               if               one               cannot               read               books               freely.

Our               freedom               to               gather               means               virtually               nothing               if               a               group               or               organization               can               be               deemed               a               terrorist               group               at               the               sole               discretion               of               the               Attorney               General               or               Secretary               of               State.

Due               process               of               law               is               extinct               if               the               government               is               allowed               to               detain               people               based               not               on               evidence,               but               on               their               "belief"               that               they               are               involved               in"terrorist"               activity,               keep               them               in               secret               locations,               and               refuse               to               share               their               locations,               conditions,               state               of               well-being               or               reasons               for               detaining               them.
               Some               members               of               Congress               have               become               worried.

Those               who               are               conscious               enough               have               asked               the               Justice               Department               to               show               how               it               is               using               its               new               powers.

They               have               received               little               to               no               information,               however.

In               fact,               most               of               the               information               regarding               libraries               and               bookstores               have               been               classified               as               ³confidential²               and               has               not               been               released               to               Congress.
               National               organizations               filing               a               request               under               the               Freedom               of               Information               Act               have               not               been               able               to               obtain               information               regarding               how               many               times               the               government               has               used               its               new               wiretap               authorities.

Meanwhile,               an               informal               survey               done               by               the               University               of               Illinois               found               that               83               libraries               across               the               country               have               been               visited               by               authorities               since               the               Sept.

11               incident.
               Under               the               Patriot               Act,               the               government               has               the               legal               authority               to               watch               and               monitor               anyone¹s               activities,               phone               conversations,               internet               usage               and               reading               habits.

They               can               read               your               email.

And               they               can               take               action               without               warning,               legally               and               secretly.
               Patriot               Act               II
               As               if               the               original               Patriot               Act               wasn't               adequate               to               discourage               the               public               from               freely               voicing               their               opinions,               reading               what               they               wish,               and               feeling               free               in               the               country               that               sees               itself               as               the               defender               of               freedom               and               democracy,               a               new               bill               dubbed               the               Patriot               Act               II               that               is               secretly               in               the               works               will               reduce               our               privacy               even               more.

The               Center               for               PUblic               Integrity               obtained               a               draft               of               the               new               legislation               that               was               dated               January               9,               2003,               and               has               published               it               on               the               internet.

This               unreleased               draft               proves               that,               although               they               have               denied               such               a               bill,               the               government               is               planning               a               new               legislation               that               further               empowers               the               government.
               After               the               Center               published               the               story               and               the               draft               of               the               bill,               the               government,               who               had               previously               denied               any               knowledge               of               such               a               proposal,               changed               its               story.

Barbara               Cromstock,               the               director               of               public               affairs               for               the               Justice               Department,               released               a               statement               saying,               "Department               staff               have               not               presented               any               final               proposals               to               either               the               Attorney               General               or               the               White               House.

It               would               be               premature               to               speculate               on               any               future               decisions,               particularly               ideas               or               proposals               that               are               still               being               discussed               at               staff               levels."               Meanwhile,               the               PBS               program               ³"Now               with               Bill               Boyers"               obtained               an               Office               of               Legislative               Affairs               control               sheet               indicating               that               a               copy               of               the               bill               was               sent               to               Speaker               of               the               House               Dennis               Hastert               and               Vice               President               Richard               Cheney               on               January               10,               2003.

"Attached               for               your               review               and               comment               is               a               draft               legislative               proposal               entitled               the               ŒDomestic               Security               Enhancement               Act               of               2003¹."               the               memo               said               that               was               sent               from               the               Office               of               Legal               Policy.

Perhaps               it               is               because               of               the               severity               of               this               bill¹s               provisions               that               it               is               surrounded               by               lies               and               dishonesty.
               Section               201               of               Patriot               Act               II,               Prohibition               of               Disclosure               of               Terrorism               Investigation               Detainee               Information,               enhances               the               Freedom               of               Information               Information               Act               officers               ability               to               deny               releasing               material               on               suspected               terrorists               in               government               custody.

In               other               words,               if               the               government               detains               someone               for               suspected               terrorism,               they               do               not               have               to               release               any               information               on               that               person.
               Section               202,               Distribution               of               ŒWorst               Case               Scenario¹               Information,               restricts               the               public¹s               information               to               private               company¹s               "worst               case               scenario"               mandatory               reports.

Companies               using               potentially               dangerous               chemicals               must               produce               these               reports,               which               include               the               effect               that               the               release               of               the               controlled               substances               would               have               on               the               surrounding               community.

If               these               reports               are               kept               confidential,               our               communities               may               be               infiltrated               with               more               companies               using               dangerous               chemicals               without               our               knowledge,               and               our               health               may               be               put               at               risk.
               Section               301-306,Terrorist               Identification               Database,               authorize               a               DNA               database               to               be               created               on               "suspected               terrorists".

The               definition               of               a               suspected               terrorist               is               expanded               to               include               association               with               suspected               terrorist               groups               and               noncitizens               suspected               of               certain               crimes.
               Section               312.

Appropriate               Remedies               with               Respect               to               Law               Enforcement               Surveillance               Activities,               terminates               state               law               enforcement               consent               decrees               before               September               11,               2001               that               limit               agencies               from               gathering               information               about               individuals               or               organizations.

It               also               places               restriction               on               court               injunctions.
               Section               405               ,               Presumption               for               Pretrial               Detention               in               Cases               Involving               Terrorism,               allows               those               suspected               of               terrorism               to               be               held               before               their               trial.
               Section               501               Expatriation               of               Terrorists               allows               an               American               citizen               to               be               expatriated               if               his               intent               to               relinquish               citizenship               is               "inferred               from               conduct".

This               would               allow               citizens               to               be               expatriated               for               engaging               in               lawful               activities               of               a               group               designated               as               a               terrorist               organization               by               the               Attorney               General.
               Dr.

David               Cole,               Georgetown               University               Law               professor,               reviewed               the               draft               legislation               and               said               that               it               "raises               a               lot               of               serious               concerns"               because               the               proposed               law               would               "radically               expand               law               enforcement               and               intelligence               gathering               authorities,               reduce               or               eliminate               judicial               oversight               over               surveillance,               authorize               secret               arrests,               create               a               DNA               database               based               on               unchecked               executive               Œsuspicion¹,               create               new               death               penalties,               and               even               seek               to               take               American               citizenship               away               from               persons               who               belonged               to               disfavored               political               groups."
               Patriot               Act               II               allows               the               government               to:
               secretly               detain               citizens               
               deport               aliens,               including               those               with               green               cards,               who               are               convicted               of               drug               possession               or               an               aggravated               felony               
               access               credit               reports               without               a               subpoena               
               abolish               federal               court               consent               decrees               that               limit               police               surveillance               of               non-               criminal               organizations               and               events               
               ease               restrictions               on               the               use               of               secret               evidence               
               collect               DNA               from               suspected               terrorists               or               any               individual               whose               DNA               might               be               able               to               assist               investigations
               Some               of               the               provisions               of               these               acts               may               seem               allowable               in               the               mission               to               combat               terrorist               activity.

The               question               is,               what               is               the               definition               of               a               terrorist?

Because               these               acts               allow               "terrorist               individuals               or               groups"               to               be               determined               by               the               discretion               of               an               individual,               anyone               who               has               views               outside               of               what               the               government               deems               acceptable               may               be               considered               a               terrorist.

Will               anti-war               protesters               be               seen               as               terrorists               or               national               security               threats?

Will               your               neighbor               who               checks               out               a               book               be               deemed               a               terrorist?
               The               Attorney               General               and               the               Executive               Branch               of               the               government               are               receiving               huge               amounts               of               power               that               will               be               unchecked               by               the               other               governmental               branches.

Opponents               to               political               power               and               other               "threats"               are               at               risk               of               being               squashed,               detained               or               dubbed               terrorists.

Our               democracy               may               slowly               be               heading               down               the               path               of               totalitarianism.

    Flaxseed               has               shown               some               benefit               in               the               treatment               of               prostate               cancer               according               to               newly               released               medical               research               study,               as               reported               in               Reuters,               in               a               article               written               by               Julie               Steenhuysen.

    The               study,               conducted               by               Duke               University,               indicated               that               flaxseed               slows               the               growth               of               prostate               tumors               in               men.

    The               findings               were               released               on               Saturday,               in               one               of               the               first               scientifically               rigorous               studies               of               alternative               medicine's               effectiveness.
                   Patients               often               take               alternative               treatments               and               therapies.

    Doctor's               studied               the               the               risks               and               benefits               of               alternative               foods               and               supplements               routinely               taken               by               patients.

    According               to               the               National               Center               of               Health               Statistics,               "Americans               spend               between               $36               billion               and               $47               billion               a               year               on               complementary               and               alternative               therapies."               reports               Reuters.
                   Reuters               quoted               Dr.

    Bruce               Cheson               of               Georgetown               University               Hospital               in               Washington,               "Patients               are               taking               these               compounds               but               we               need               to               know               if               they               are               doing               any               good               of               any               harm."               Cheson               led               a               panel               on               alternative               therapies               in               a               meeting               of               the               American               Society               of               Clinical               Oncology.
                   Researchers               at               Duke               University               medical               Center,               in               North               Carolina,               conducted               a               study               on               flaxseed               and               it's               role               as               a               food               supplement.

    The               study               was               conducted               on               161               men               who               were               scheduled               for               prostate               cancer               surgery.

    Dr.

    Nancy               Davidson,               an               oncologist               at               Johns               Hopkins               University               in               Baltimore               and               president-elect               of               ASCO,               was               quoted               by               Reuters,               "The               growth               rate               was               decreased               in               the               men               who               got               flaxseed.

    I               think               this               is               fascinating."
                   Flaxseed               is               rich               in               omega               -3               fatty               acids               and               ligans.

    Lignans               are               a               fiber               found               on               the               seed               coat.

    The               Duke               University               study               was               led               by               Wendy               Demark-Wahnefried,               a               researcher               in               duke's               School               of               Nursing.

    Wendy               Demark-Wahnefried               was               quoted               by               Reuters,               "               We               were               looking               at               flaxseed               because               of               it's               unique               nutrient               profile.
                   In               the               study,               half               of               the               men               added               30               of               flaxseed               to               their               diet               of               about               30               days.

    Half               of               the               flaxseed               group               also               went               on               a               low-fat               diet.

    The               men               had               their               cancer               surgeries.

    After               the               surgery,               researchers               studied               the               tumor               cells               to               learn               how               quickly               the               cancer               had               multiplied.

    They               found               that               the               men               who               had               eaten               flaxseed               had               a               30               to               40               percent               slower               growth               of               cancer.
                   In               spite               of               these               positive               results,               Demark-Wahnefried               is               not               ready               to               prescribe               flaxseed.

    Reuter               quoted               her,               "It's               a               healthy               food.

    It               has               a               lot               of               vitamins               and               a               lot               of               fiber.

    But               we               can               not               definitely               say               at               this               point               you               should               take               flaxseed               because               it               is               protective               against               prostate               cancer.
                   Duke               University               had               previously               conducted               a               study               on               mice               that               were               genetically               engineered               to               get               cancer,               and               had               positive               results               with               flaxseed.
                   Nutrition               experts               have               long               been               recommending               adding               flaxseed               to               the               diet,               for               it's               nutrients               and               health               benefits.

    According               the               may               Clinic               website,               flaxseed               is               high               in               fiber,               omega-3               fatty               acids               and               phytochemicals               called               lignans.

    Flaxseed               can               help               to               reduce               LDL               (bad)               cholesterol               levers,               and               total               cholesterol               levels.

    Reducing               cholesterol               levels               may               reduce               the               risk               of               heart               disease.
                   Nutritionists               recommend               eating               the               whole               flaxseed,               rather               that               a               flaxseed               oil               supplement,               because               the               supplements               don't               have               the               beneficial               fiber.
                   Flaxseed               can               be               purchased               in               health               food               stores.

    Whole               seeds               can               be               ground               for               better               assimilation               of               the               beneficial               nutrients.

    There               is               no               recommended               amount               of               flaxseed               at               this               time.

    Flaxseed               can               easily               be               added               to               the               diet               by               sprinkling               a               tablespoon               of               ground               flaxseed               to               cereal               or               sprinkling               it               on               yogurt.

    Flaxseeds               are               relatively               small               and               have               a               slightly               nutty               flavor.

    About 'georgetown university marketing'|Columbia Sales Consortium to Represent Georgetown University Press








    A               little               over               a               year               ago,               I               graduated               from               a               bottom               tier               school               with               a               degree               in               political               science.

    I               had               originally               planned               to               get               a               business               degree,               but               when               I               found               out               it               would               require               an               additional               year               or               two               of               school,               I               reconsidered               and               went               with               one               of               my               other               fields               of               interest.

    Now,               I               will               soon               start               an               MBA               program               anyway,               at               a               greater               cost               than               an               additional               two               years               of               undergraduate               education.

    Too               many               of               my               friends               who               were               in               my               classes               are               finding               that               their               degrees               will               open               doors,               it               is               true,               but               to               the               following               careers:               manager               at               a               Target               or               Enterprise               Rent-a-Car               or               selling               insurance.

    Now               part               of               the               problem               comes               from               the               fact               that               our               university               gave               very               little               career               support               to               our               liberal               arts               departments               and               little,               if               any,               internship               opportunities.
                   I               do               not               want               to               see               more               people               end               up               in               the               same               situation               as               we               did,               so               I               have               come               up               with               the               following               advice               to               make               the               most               of               an               otherwise               worthless               political               science               degree.Most               of               this               advice               is               collected               from               my               own               observations               and               from               the               advice               of               more               successful               colleagues               in               political               science.
                   1.

    Volunteer               with               a               national               campaign
                   If               you               plan               to               actually               work               in               the               field               of               politics               with               your               degree               (even               if               only               as               a               research               analyst)               you               need               to               first               pick               a               party               (either               one,               does               not               matter)               and               volunteer               with               every               national               campaign               possible.

    Presidential               campaigns               are               the               best,               of               course,               but               even               a               Senator               or               Congressman               works               as               well.
                   During               the               off               seasons,               attend               your               chosen               party's               meetings,               volunteer               for               everything               you               have               time               to               do               with               them,               and               kiss               butt               and               suck               up               to               the               state               party               leaders               if               you               get               the               chance.

    Mention               to               the               highest               ranking               people               you               can               what               your               particular               skills               are               (research,               quantitative               analysis,               public               speaking,               or               marketing)               and               offer               to               help               them               in               anyway               they               can               use               you.
                   If               offered               an               opportunity,               do               not               decline               it,               even               if               you               have               conflicting               obligations,               try               to               find               a               way               to               get               out               of               the               other               obligations               and               help               the               party.

    If               you               do               this               when               you               are               young               and               still               in               college,               it               will               pay               off               greatly               in               the               end.
                   2.

    Internships               are               more               important               than               even               your               GPA
                   In               politics,               it               is               not               what               you               know               (or               how               well               you               know               it)               but               really               who               you               know.

    If               you               do               not               know               anyone,               then               you               may               as               well               plan               to               sell               insurance.

    Sure,               a               high               GPA               is               nice,               but               if               you               are               not               going               to               a               top               tier               school,               it               is               irrelevant.

    I               graduated               with               a               3.86               with               honors,               and               it               did               not               do               me               a               bit               of               good               in               finding               a               job               in               Washington.

    So               unless               you               are               going               to               Georgetown,               Princeton,               Harvard,               Yale,               or               any               of               the               other               ivies,               you               can               afford               to               let               your               GPA               suffer               (but               try               to               keep               it               above               3.0)               as               long               as               you               are               putting               in               tons               of               work               into               an               internship.
                   Working               as               an               intern               for               a               campaign               is               best,               particularly               if               you               can               work               with               the               fundraisers               or               with               anyone               who               talks               to               the               fundraisers.

    It               is               through               these               contacts               you               will               be               able               to               build               your               network               and               have               a               better               ability               to               land               an               actual               political               job               when               you               graduate.

    In               addition,               when               I               say               fundraisers,               I               am               not               talking               the               phone               bank               calling               people               and               asking               for               donations,               I               mean               working               with               the               person               who               calls               the               big               donors               and               sets               up               the               $1,000               a               plate               dinners.

    Also,               volunteer               to               help               with               the               dinner,               ideally               at               reception               or               some               other               role               where               you               will               meet               many               of               the               attendees.
                   If               there               is               no               campaign               going               on               at               the               time,               then               you               can               also               volunteer               with               your               local               congressional               representative's               office.

    I               would               recommend               a               representative               over               a               senator               because               they               have               less               of               a               workload,               so               you               would               have               more               time               to               get               advice               from               the               local               office               manager,               attend               meetings               on               behalf               of               the               representative,               and               meet               even               more               people               to               expand               your               network.
                   In               short,               remember               this               much               at               least.

    An               internship               in               political               science               is               not               about               gaining               skills               or               experience;               it               is               about               building               a               network               to               land               a               future               job.
                   2b.

    Get               an               internship               in               Washington
                   Save               up               money               as               soon               as               you               can               to               do               an               internship               in               Washington               with               a               representative               or               senator.

    In               the               capital,               you               can               work               for               either               since               both               are               equally               busy.

    However,               if               you               have               been               working               with               a               representative               locally,               you               probably               have               a               better               chance               at               working               with               their               office               in               the               capital.
                   Now,               being               an               intern               for               Congress               is               very               competitive               and               cutthroat               and               you               will               deal               with               a               lot               of               abuse               from               the               senior               office               staff               (often               only               a               few               years               older               than               you               are).

    If               you               did               not               go               to               a               top               tier               school,               expect               a               lot               of               abuse               and               condescending               behavior.
                   Try               to               do               this               over               the               summer,               since               it               will               not               be               as               expensive               and               you               will               have               to               put               up               with               the               abuse               a               shorter               amount               of               time.

    However,               between               the               menial               busy               work               the               senior               staff               assigns               you,               such               as               bringing               them               coffee,               making               copies,               opening               letter,               and               running               errands               for               them,               be               sure               to               get               in               a               lot               of               networking               with               other               interns,               especially               those               who               went               to               top               tier               schools.

    They               are               the               most               likely               to               be               your               future               bosses               and               best               job               leads.

    If               you               get               in               good               with               them               now,               it               will               pay               off               later.
                   If               you               are               lucky               enough               to               get               into               an               office               with               nice               and               respectful               senior               staff,               try               to               get               in               good               with               the               chief               of               staff               and               other               senior               staffers               as               well,               as               they               are               typically               there               long               enough               to               move               into               lobbying               in               their               late               20s,               so               they               might               recommend               that               you               take               over               for               them               once               you               graduate.
                   Do               not               expect               to               meet               with               or               hang               out               with               the               representative               very               often,               but               if               you               do,               make               the               most               of               it               and               try               to               get               them               to               like               you               enough               to               invite               you               to               special               events               with               big               name               lobbyists               and               party               bigwigs.
                   3.

    Networking               for               fun               and               profit
                   The               internship               is               vital               as               a               means               to               an               end.

    As               I               stated               before,               the               goal               of               an               internship               is               not               to               gain               experience,               but               to               build               a               network               (and               this               is               largely               true               in               any               field,               not               just               politics               ï¿½â'¬"               but               it               is               more               fundamental               to               your               future               political               career               opportunities).

    So               some               advice               about               networking:               be               open               to               all,               ask               advice               at               every               chance               and               always               try               to               come               up               with               a               good               question.

    If               you               can               show               someone               you               are               interested               in               a               subject               or               their               background,               likely               they               will               give               you               their               business               card               and               tell               you               to               contact               them               sometime               if               you               have               more               questions.
                   Now               with               these               business               cards,               keep               all               of               them               and               enter               the               information               into               a               spreadsheet               for               future               use.

    Be               sure               to               include               information               about               what               you               talked               about               with               the               individual               and               other               notes               that               help               you               remember               who               they               are.

    Write               notes               on               the               back               of               the               card               if               you               need               to               and               then               include               those               notes               in               your               spreadsheet.

    Then,               be               sure               to               send               a               short               follow               up               email               after               the               event               where               you               got               the               card               and               thank               them               for               talking               to               you               about               the               subject               you               discussed.

    A               few               months               down               the               road,               ask               them               another               question               related               to               the               same               subject               or               their               field.

    Repeat               this               every               three               months               or               so,               but               always               keep               the               e-mails               short               and               to               the               point.
                   If               you               are               lucky,               they               might               invite               you               to               other               events,               which               present               more               networking               opportunities.

    Keeping               in               touch               with               these               people               also               presents               opportunities               for               letters               of               recommendation,               if               you               plan               to               get               your               masters,               and               of               course,               job               opportunities               when               you               graduate.

    The               trick               is               to               keep               them               informed               about               how               soon               you               will               graduate               and               letting               them               know               the               sorts               of               projects               that               you               have               been               working               on               in               your               internship               and               in               school.
                   4.

    Pick               a               specialty               and               become               an               expert
                   This               advice               is               important               no               matter               if               you               plan               to               work               for               a               non-profit,               representative,               or               lobbying               firm               after               graduation.

    Try               to               become               a               knowledge               master               of               one               or               two               related               fields               and               know               a               little               about               several               others.
                   For               example,               learn               everything               you               can               about               monetary               and               tax               policy,               or               education,               or               transportation,               etc.

    Read               scholarly               journals,               news               articles,               find               information               on               the               internet,               and               interview               people               in               these               fields.

    When               given               the               opportunity               in               your               classes,               write               essays               on               the               subject               and               save               them.

    Put               all               your               work               into               a               portfolio               to               show               future               employers.
                   Once               you               have               built               up               this               knowledge               base,               you               will               have               a               strong               foundation               to               sell               yourself               to               issue               specific               lobbying               firms               or               non-profits,               or               to               representatives               and               senators               on               those               committees               related               to               your               field               of               expertise.
                   5.

    Classes               you               cannot               afford               to               pass               up
                   While               you               are               still               in               college,               make               sure               you               use               your               electives               on               some               of               these               classes               if               they               are               not               already               required:
                   Grant               Writing:               No               matter               where               you               work               in               politics,               this               will               be               vital,               as               you               will               always               be               on               one               side               or               the               other               of               a               grant.

    Ideally,               find               a               class               that               includes               information               about               the               federal               contracting               process               if               possible.
                   Quantitative               Analysis:               Often               required               now               in               many               programs,               but               if               not,               be               sure               to               take               a               good               class               in               statistics,               you               should               use               statistical               analysis               in               your               essays               and               reports               for               your               classes,               it               makes               them               look               prettier,               making               you               look               like               a               stronger               job               candidate.
                   Project               Management:               A               lot               of               the               more               research               and               consultant               related               political               jobs               require               this               knowledge,               so               get               it               if               research,               lobbying,               or               political               consulting               is               your               goal.
                   Financial               and               Managerial               Accounting:               You               will               probably               never               use               it,               but               it               still               makes               you               look               like               a               good               candidate.

    In               addition,               it               will               usually               be               a               pre-requisite               for               Government               and               Non-Profit               Accounting,               which               could               prove               useful.
                   Depending               on               your               career               goals,               there               may               be               other               classes               that               will               prove               useful.

    Overall,               I               would               recommend               a               minor               in               some               field               of               business,               such               as               accounting               or               economics.

    Business               is               always               a               good               backup               to               your               major               and               could               open               doors               that               other               minors               might               not.
                   To               sum               up
                   Following               this               advice,               you               should               have               no               problem               making               the               best               of               your               political               science               degree.

    If               I               had               it               to               do               over               again,               I               would               have               taken               every               piece               of               this               advice,               and               maybe               now               I               would               be               a               lobbyist               making               six               figures               instead               of               a               temporary               worker               trying               to               get               into               accounting               and               finance.
                   If               you               are               a               senior               graduating               this               year               with               a               political               science               degree               and               have               not               done               anything               on               this               list,               I               would               highly               recommend               you               postpone               graduating               until               you               at               least               get               some               networking               and               party               experience               under               your               belt.

    You               should               keep               yourself               in               part               time               status               and               maybe               use               those               extra               credits               for               internships,               independent               study,               or               the               classes               I               recommended               previously.

    This               way               you               do               not               end               up               having               to               pay               back               student               loans               before               you               are               ready.
                   It               is               worse               to               go               ahead               and               graduate               and               end               up               with               a               $30,000               job               as               a               retail               manager               or               insurance               salesperson               rather               than               add               a               few               thousand               more               in               student               loan               debt               to               make               the               connections               you               need               to               land               that               $50,000               job               (or               better)               in               the               field               of               politics.

    This               is               especially               true               if               you               are               going               to               a               lower               tier               school,               where               the               name               on               your               degree               will               not               get               you               noticed,               but               who               you               know               would.
